My Washer Isn't Spinning. What's Going On?

There are few things more frustrating than opening your washer to remove a freshly washed load of laundry, only to find that it's all soaking wet. Before you panic and assume that your washer is broken, take a moment to follow these steps that may help solve the problem and even prevent it in the future.

Adjust The Laundry Load

Sometimes, during a wash cycle, your laundry load can become off-balance. In other words, the majority of your laundry will end up on one side of the drum. Newer washing machines will not spin if the load is unbalanced. So, you can try moving the load around, closing the door, and running just the spin cycle to see if this solves the problem.

Level Your Washer

If your washer is not level, you should adjust the legs under the appliance. If uneven, your washer will probably still spin but it will not spin properly. It will vibrate more and make significantly more noise too. Not to mention the fact that all this vibration can cause damage to various working parts.

Check The Plug

This is particularly important when it comes to washers that are not level. If your washer 'hops' around, it could cause the power cord to come out of the outlet. This interrupts the wash cycle and is most likely the reason for it failing to spin. Alternatively, if the breaker trips during the wash cycle, it's obvious that it will not spin. So, check the outlet and breaker to make sure that they are not at fault.

Get Rid Of Yhat Extension Cord

If you are using an extension cord to connect your washer to a power outlet, you should get rid of it right away. Your washer uses a lot of electricity and most extension cords do not offer sufficient capacity. Not only can it cause your washer to not work properly, but it can also pose a fire risk. Have an electrician install a plug closer to your washer instead.

Check The Spin Switch

If you have a top-loader, you will notice a small protrusion under the lid. It depresses when the lid is closed. If this switch is damaged, your washer may not spin because the appliance will 'think' that the lid is open. You can test it by opening the lid, selecting the spin cycle and pressing down on the switch. If it does not spin, this is the likely reason why.

Use The Right Detergent

Front-loading washers need high-efficiency detergents with low foam action. Other detergents can produce too many suds that the machine sensors believe the appliance to be too full. This results in slower spin speeds and your clothes will not come out as dry as they should.

Check The Drainage Hose

There could be a kink in the drainage hose. Take a moment to inspect the hose from start to finish for any visible blockages. Another possibility is that there is a blockage inside the hose. You can remove the hose to inspect the interior and flush it out if necessary. Inspect the rest of the drainage system while you are at it. There could be dirt, debris or even coins causing a blockage.
