oven broiler won't heat up

Help! The Broiler On My Oven Won't Heat Up

As you get ready to cook up a storm, there are few things worse than finding out your broiler will not heat up. It's a good idea to note that sometimes this problem is caused by a minor error but there could also be a more significant fault that needs to be repaired. Below you will find some of the most common causes behind your faulty broiler.

Faulty Ignition

In order for the gas burner to ignite, you need the igniter to function properly. You can check the igniter by monitoring it as you try to turn your stove on. If the igniter glows for more than 90 seconds without igniting the flame, this normally indicates that the igniter is too weak and therefore fails to ignite the gas. If this is the case, the igniter will need to be replaced.

Burned Out Element

If the broiler element has burned out, you will notice that it no longer glows red hot. In most cases, a burned-out element is visibly damaged. You can use a multimeter to test the element if you want to be extra sure. If the element is burned out, it should be replaced.

Thermostat Fault

If the temperature control thermostat is not working properly, the broiler element may not heat up at all. This part cannot be repaired and it will need to be replaced.

Defective Spark Electrode

The electrode is located next to the burner. It works much like a spark plug. When power is applied, the spark jumps from the electrode to the tip of the electrode shield. If the electrode is damaged or worn, the spark may not occur and this is something that you will be able to see very clearly.

Relay Board Defect

If your oven is equipped with a relay board, this could be the cause behind the fault. If one or more relays on the board fail, the broil element will not work. This is not the most common fault that can occur. Which is why you should check all of the possible faults listed above before investigating a potential relay board problem.

Faulty Control Board

The control board has relays that send voltage to the circuits according to the settings and sensor input. If the control board I defective, the necessary voltage will not be sent to the element. Since this is a difficult problem to diagnose, it's best to look into other possible problems before testing the control board.

Safety Valve Issue

If the faults mentioned above are not the cause of the problem, it could be the safety valve. This part works in conjunction with the oven igniter to send gas to the burner. If it no longer works, it will most likely need to be replaced.

Pressure Regulator And Value Problem

This is not one of the most common reasons for such a fault. In some cases, the fault can present as a valve or pressure regulator issue when another fault is present. This is why even trained technicians check other parts for faults before considering this as a potential cause.

Burnt Or Loose Wire Connection

If any of the wires that connect the element to the burner igniter are burned or loose, this will result in a failure to heat. In many cases, the damage is clearly visible and wiring will need to be professionally replaced.
